Parent Resource Center Mission Statement:

The mission of the Parent Resource Center is to build stronger, healthier families by offering volunteer in-home mentoring, support services and parenting education to parents who are at risk for child abuse and neglect.

About Us:

The Parent Resource Center, a Family Resource Center, is a private, non-profit, child abuse prevention agency.  The Center offers support to parents through in-home volunteer mentoring and on-site parenting education classes to decrease the risk of child abuse, neglect and family violence. The goal of the Center is to provide emotional and educational support for parents in nurturing and guiding their children through the critical first 5 years of a child’s life. The Center operates with a small professional staff and over 50 well-trained, closely supervised volunteers. This approach of in-home visitation and on-site parenting education is designed to meet both the short and long term needs of the family and is a powerful combination in reducing the risk of child abuse, child neglect and family violence. The target population is the high-risk parent, with a focus on first time pregnancies and parenting teens. The Center has a well-established base of collaborative partners, which includes other community-based organizations that provide a source of referrals.  Services are confidential and free of charge and do not exclude anyone because of race, color, national origin, political affiliation, religion, marital status, sex, handicap, or sexual orientation.

The Center receives the major portion of its funding from community sources such as grants, foundations, local businesses, service clubs, fund-raising events, private individuals and government contracts.

History:

The Parent Resource Center has a combined experience of 24 years of in-home parenting support and education services. From 1979 to 1992 the agency was known as the “Home Visiting Project” of Public Health’s Stanislaus County Early Assessment Intervention Program (EAIP). When Public Health experienced budget cuts, committed community volunteers advocated to continue the valuable volunteer mentoring project. These caring men and women had a vision of providing volunteers to assist families within the community who are at risk of abusing their children. In November 1992, a Board of Directors was formed and a site for the Center was selected. Start-up funds were obtained from the community to renovate an old bank building located in the geographical area in West Modesto of the target population served. The Parent Resource Center became a private, non-profit (501c3) organization on June 21, 1993 and has since become an integral part of the prevention of child abuse and neglect in our Stanislaus County community.

As of January 2003, the Parent Resource Center became a United Way of Stanislaus County Member Agency. We are proud of this important collaboration to improve the quality of lives for families in Stanislaus County.
